During Meghan Markle’s appearance with her husband Prince Harry at Global Citizen Live on Saturday, the Duchess of Sussex wore a customized version of Princess Diana’s favorite handbag, the Lady Dior.
While Markle’s Dior Lady D-Lite bag ($4,900) is a more modern take on the design – even personalized with her title, “DSOS” – the black embroidered style is strikingly similar to the one her late mother-in-law frequently carried.

According to the Financial Times, Princess Diana was given the bag in 1995 by French Prime Minister Jacques Chirac’s wife Bernadette, and she wore it so frequently that the fashion house dubbed the design the Lady Dior in her honor in 1996.
The Duchess of Sussex even wore it to one of her own big moments in New York, the 1996 Met Gala, wearing it with a navy gown.
Instead, Meghan wore the special accessory with a sparkling white Valentino gown to the international music festival, where she and Harry joined a call to increase vaccination efforts around the world.
The royals are known for subtly conveying messages through their clothing and accessories, and this isn’t the first time Meghan Markle has paid tribute to her late mother-in-law Princess Diana.
Meghan has worn several of the late Princess of Wales’ precious pieces of jewelry, including a Cartier bracelet for her Oprah tell-all and an aquamarine ring for her wedding reception, in addition to wearing similar styles at times.

And the Dior bag wasn’t the only way she and Harry paid tribute to Diana during their September visit to New York; they also stayed at one of the late royal’s favorite NYC hotels, the Carlyle.
Aside from attending the Global Citizen Festival, the couple’s trip to New York included meetings with the US ambassador to the United Nations and a visit to a Harlem elementary school.
