The Masked Singer: Ruth Pointer Revealed As Cupcake After Elimination

The latest episode of Fox’s hit show, The Masked Singer saw Grammy-award-winning Ruth Pointer being revealed as Cupcake after her performance.

Singer-songwriter, Ruth Pointer is best known as the eldest member of the American family vocal group, The Pointer Sisters.

Ruth had taken to the stage in a giant purple Cupcake costume to perform Martha Reeves & The Vandellas’ song Heat Wave.

The 75-year-old faced off against the duo Banana Split, the Queen Of Hearts, Mallard, and new wildcard Caterpillar in Group B, before the host, Nick Cannon made it known that she was the next contestant to be evicted from the show.

However, before taking her final bow, Canon gave the panelists a final chance to guess her identity.

The Masked Singer judges, Ken Jeong, Robin Thicke, and Jenny McCarthy, guessed Tina Turner, Leslie Jones, and Grace Jones respectively. 

However, the only other correct guess came from Nicole Scherzinger after changing her initial answer from Roberta Flack to Pointer. 

Upon being unmasked, Ruth revealed that initially there were going to be two Cupcakes on the show, but her sister, Anita was unable to compete due to health reasons, so she decided to compete alone instead.

The Pointer Sisters are an R&B group from Oakland, California, that made waves in the 1970s and 1980s performing a dance, country, rock, disco, jazz, bebop, blues, soul, funk, acoustic, and electronic music.

The group have bagged three Grammy Awards and was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1994. There were 13 chart-topping US singles during the group’s heyday from 1973 to 1985.

Sisters, June and Bonnie Pointer formed the group in 1969 with the name “Pointers, a Pair” but with the addition of their sister Anita, the band became a trio. The trio became a quartet when Ruth joined in 1972.
