Blizzard has just clarified how the transition to a battle pass system in Overwatch 2 will work in practice. When the team shooter launches on October 4th, it will include both free and $10 premium battle passes, similar to other free-to-play titles.
You’ll also be dealing with a virtual currency, Overwatch Coins, which you’ll use to purchase the pass and other items. In contrast to other games, you can earn those coins for free simply by playing frequently.
You can upgrade to the premium track for free if you play frequently enough (grouping and weekly challenges will help).
The developer also elaborated on how you’ll unlock heroes. To get the new support Kiriko (shown above) or other heroes for free, you must first reach tier 55 — a lot of work, but it is doable.
The catch is that premium battle pass holders will have immediate access to these characters and will be able to practice with them sooner.
After Season Two, new heroes are expected every other season, and Blizzard will allow you to obtain champions from previous seasons by completing challenges or purchasing them with Overwatch Coins.
As previously stated, Blizzard’s primary goal is to profit from cosmetic item purchases, which now include “Mythic” skins with customizable layers. With each season’s battle pass, you’ll receive one Mythic skin.

Everyone will have free access to new maps, with new playing fields appearing on alternate seasons. PvE (the more story-oriented mode) is still scheduled for 2023.
If you were concerned that Blizzard would make it too difficult to obtain heroes or desirable cosmetics without spending real money, this approach may be welcome. Having said that, there’s still a compelling reason to pay, especially if you don’t have the time or inclination to grind tiers.
