A U.S. destroyer stationed in the Red Sea has successfully intercepted and shot down 14 one-way attack drones, according to defense officials.

The USS Carney, operating in the area, engaged the drones that were launched from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen. No injuries or damage to the ship or other vessels in the vicinity were reported.

The incident took place in the early morning hours of December 16, local time. The USS Carney, an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, effectively neutralized the unmanned aerial systems (UAS) that were identified as one-way attack drones.

The UAS were shot down without causing any harm to the ships present in the area.

In a statement released by U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), it was emphasized that the regional Red Sea partners were promptly alerted to the threat.

The USS Carney has been actively combating incoming attack drones in recent weeks, having successfully intercepted and shot down a total of 37 drones.

Additionally, the HMS Diamond, a British warship, also shot down one Houthi drone on Saturday following the USS Carney’s extended engagement in the Red Sea.
