In a recent interview, “Succession” actor Brian Cox expressed his strong opinions about religion and its impact on the world.
Known for his role as Logan Roy in the popular TV series, Cox is a self-professed atheist and socialist. He argued that religion has misled and hindered humanity, contributing to what he perceives as their stupidity.
Speaking on the Starting Line podcast, Cox didn’t hold back in his assessment of religion. He claimed that it has sold humans a false story about reality, leading them astray and causing a multitude of problems.

Brian Cox pointed to historical events such as the Holocaust, wars in Ukraine and Gaza, and ongoing conflicts in the Middle East as examples of religion’s detrimental effects.
According to Cox, the repetition of these horrors can be attributed to faulty belief systems that fail to serve humanity.
He criticized the Middle East conflict, stating that it will never cease as long as it is fueled by these flawed ideologies. Frustrated with the loss of lives and the ignorance of people, Cox lamented, “People are so stupid… and they cannot see the writing on the wall.”
Cox argued that one of the main issues with religion is that it shields individuals from examining their contributions to society’s problems.
He believes that the concept of God and the idea of divine care for humanity are misleading. Instead, he asserts that people need to focus on self-reflection and introspection.
Expressing his disdain for the Bible, Cox called it “one of the worst books ever.” He specifically criticized the creation account of Adam and Eve, viewing it as propaganda that has perpetuated a patriarchal society.
Cox believes that the notion of Adam’s rib being used to create Eve is a prime example of the Bible’s falsehoods, which people blindly accept due to their ignorance.
According to Brian Cox, religion is not the truth but rather a mythology created to control and maintain patriarchal structures.
He argues that society has not given enough consideration to the matriarchy and that humans have yet to evolve to a point where they can address their problems without relying on religion.
As an actor, Cox finds solace in the theater, which he considers the “one true church.” He believes that the theater provides a space for humanity to confront the false gods they create for themselves. Cox sees the concept of God as a conceit that society fails to acknowledge.
Through his craft, Cox has discovered answers to life’s questions. He suggests that looking inward and exploring our own humanity is a more effective way to tackle problems than turning to religion.
