Jake Bauers’ Retirement Scare, Family Motivation and Brewers’ World Series Run
Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Jake Bauers considered walking away from baseball after the 2024 season, but a growing family and a renewed approach to the game helped bring him back.

Jake Bauers’ journey to the World Series has been shaped by career uncertainty, family responsibilities, and a renewed commitment to baseball. The Milwaukee Brewers first baseman once considered retiring after the 2024 season, but he returned to the game and became a key contributor to the team’s postseason success.
The Brewers are set to face the Tampa Bay Rays when Game 1 of the World Series begins October 23. Bauers, 31, enters the matchup after helping Milwaukee reach the championship series following a 103-win regular season and a National League Championship Series victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
His path to this moment was far from straightforward. After spending a decade in the minors and major leagues with teams including the Tampa Bay Rays, Cleveland Guardians, Seattle Mariners and New York Yankees, Bauers was traded to Milwaukee in 2023. By the end of the following season, he was seriously considering whether to continue playing professionally.
Jake Bauers Considered Retiring After the 2024 MLB Season
Bauers and his wife, Lauren, were adjusting to life as parents following the birth of their daughter, Marlee Jane. With the 2024 season behind him and free agency ahead, the first baseman was uncertain about his future in baseball.
Speaking to Good Morning America on October 20, Bauers explained why he believed his playing career might be coming to an end.
"I was beat up after a long season," the athlete recalled. "We had our daughter. We didn’t necessarily know what was next. I was a free agent. There wasn’t a lot of interest around the league. I just felt like it could’ve been time to move on."
Bauers said the couple had been preparing for Lauren to return to teaching when he informed his agent that he might be finished with baseball. However, news that they were expecting another child changed the situation.
"To be completely honest with you, the only thing that brought me back was my wife got pregnant,” Bauers recently told Fox Sports, "and I’m like, 'All right, well, we need health insurance for these kids.'"
The prospect of supporting his growing family ultimately played a decisive role in his return to the sport.
Brewers First Baseman Jake Bauers Finds a New Approach to Baseball
After re-signing with Milwaukee in 2025, Bauers returned with a different mindset. Rather than dwelling on the pressures surrounding his career, he focused on competing and enjoying the game.
“Just tried to reexamine the way I approach the game,” he explained, “and just go out and compete and try and be free.”
That approach coincided with a successful season for the Brewers, who won 103 regular-season games before capturing the National League Championship Series title.
Milwaukee also swept the Los Angeles Dodgers in the series, a significant turnaround after the Dodgers shut out the Brewers the previous year.
Bauers played a major role in the postseason run. He drew a 12-pitch walk in Game 2 of the NLCS and hit a home run on the 11th pitch he faced in Game 3. His performances helped earn him the series’ Most Valuable Player award.
Despite the individual recognition, Bauers has been quick to acknowledge the support he receives at home while pursuing his baseball career.
Jake Bauers Praises Wife Lauren for Supporting His MLB Career
With Bauers spending considerable time on the road, Lauren has taken on much of the responsibility of caring for their children. The first baseman recognized her efforts during an October 12 press conference.
“She’s holding it down at home by herself a lot of the time, which it’s a lot,” Bauers said. "Those kids, they’re a blessing and we love them, but man, they’re a handful. So for her to do that and for her to allow me the opportunity to come here and keep going and just support me any way she can, it’s been crazy. It’s been crazy to see her growth as a woman and a mom.”
Bauers also acknowledged that balancing family life and a professional baseball career has not always been easy. He credited Lauren for remaining by his side through difficult periods.
“She stuck by me this whole time when it wasn’t always easy,” he continued. “I wasn’t always the best husband. I wasn’t always the best father.”
Lauren, meanwhile, expressed pride in the person and player he has become. Speaking to WDJT CBS 58 Sports Director Lance Allan, she praised his development and the work he has put into his career.
“He has built himself to be the man that he is and the baseball player that he is,” she told Allan. “So, he does deserve it and I’m just so proud of him.”
As Bauers and the Brewers prepare for the World Series, his return to baseball represents more than a second chance on the field. After contemplating retirement, he has found a renewed purpose in the game while recognizing the family support that helped him continue his career.
