The last time the stadium saw a competitive football match was in 12 April 2016 where Nigeria hosted the 2nd leg of the African Women’s Cup of Nations qualifier between the Super Falcons of Nigeria and Senegal.

Once the renovations have been completed , the improved standards would allow Nigeria to host any FIFA soccer tournament at the stadium.

Nigerian minister of youths and sports development, Mr Sunday Dare confirmed the partnership and stated that “Yes, Abuja is coming back up“. The renovations are set to commence within the next 2 weeks.

The minister was also quoted as saying that:

“And we will use the same model, we will adopt the pitch model for several of our stadia. At least, the three other big ones.”

“We are looking at between now and March, we should have four big stadia, football pitches, FIFA standard.”

Should the stadium reach the required international standard that would allow the country to host Major FIFA events, this would greatly  benefit not only the football community, but also the country at large by bringing in many football tourists
