Jose Mourinho, former Manchester United and Chelsea coach replaces Mauricio Pochettino, who was dismissed on Tuesday.
The negotiations between Spurs and Mourinho after a while he was dismissed by United in December, became more intense over the last few days and concluded in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Mourinho stated: “I am excited to be joining a club with such a great heritage and such passionate supporters. The quality in both the squad and the academy excites me. Working with these players is what has attracted me.”
As Tottenham travels to London Stadium on Saturday to take on West Ham in the Premier League,it will be Mourinho’s first game as the new coach.
Daniel Levy, the chairperson, said he was unwilling to dismiss Pochettino, whose Spurs side lost to Liverpool in the last season’s Champions League final, but explained that the decision had to be taken in the “club’s best interests”
Mourinho won three Premier League titles with Chelsea and is one of three coaches to have won the UEFA Champions League twice with two clubs, FC Porto in 2004 and Inter Milan in 2010.
“In Jose we have one of the most successful managers in football,” Levy stated on Wednesday.
“He has a wealth of experience, can inspire teams and is a great tactician. He has won honors at every club he has coached. We believe he will bring energy and belief to the dressing room.”
Mourinho, who lives in London, takes over Tottenham with the club 14th in the Premier League and have won just five matches all season. He turned down other job offers in China, Spain, and Portugal since he left United.
One can say that Mourinho saw this coming…
