Britney Spears has revealed that she received a letter inviting her to testify before Congress about her contentious conservatorship, which sparked the #FreeBritney movement.
“I received this letter months ago … An invitation to share my story … I was immediately flattered and at the time I wasn’t nearly at the healing stage I’m in now,” Britney Spears, 40, wrote in a post to Instagram Wednesday along with a photo of the letter dated Dec. 1, 2021.

Britney wrote that she was grateful that her experience was “even ACKNOWLEDGED” and that the letter gave her validation, “I felt heard and like I mattered for the first time in my life!!!” she explained.
The singer said the outreach was especially meaningful given her estrangement from her family, who placed her in conservatorship in February 2008 and allowed it to continue for nearly 14 years while the pop star raked in millions.
She wrote, “In a world where your own family goes against you, it’s actually hard to find people that get it and show empathy!!!! Again, I’m not here to be a victim although I’m the first to admit I’m pretty messed up by it all … I want to help others in vulnerable situations, take life by the balls and be brave!!!”
“I wish I would have been … I was so scared and nothing is worse than your own family doing what they did to me … I’m lucky to have a small circle of adorable friends who I can count on … In the mean time thank you to Congress for inviting me to the White House,” she added.
Spears said the outreach was especially meaningful given her estrangement from her family, who placed her in conservatorship in February 2008 and allowed it to continue for nearly 14 years while the pop star raked in millions.
“There is no doubt that your story will empower countless others outside the millions that are already inspired by you and your art. Please know that you have absolutely no obligation to do anything more but fight for yourself, but if you are willing, we would appreciate learning more about the emotional and financial turmoil you faced within the conservatorship system,” the letter stated.
The representatives also expressed “concern” about a Los Angeles judge appointing a lawyer to Spears’ case at the start of the conservatorship rather than allowing her to choose her own. (Rosentgart was eventually retained by her in July 2021.)
Jamie Spears, Britney’s father, served as her primary conservator for more than a decade before being suspended in September 2021, three months after she testified in court that the legal arrangement was “abusive” and controlled every aspect of her life.
Britney has gone on several tirades against her family members, including mother Lynne Spears and sister Jamie Lynn Spears, since being released from conservatorship and regaining control of her estate.
