According to reports, a guy arrested in connection with the stabbing death of Jewish leader Samantha Woll in Detroit last month was freed by police late Friday.

According to The Detroit News, which cited four police sources, the suspect was apprehended in Kalamazoo on Tuesday and questioned for 72 hours after making an imprecise statement to authorities about the Oct. 21 death.

There have been few specifics provided regarding the statement, and The Detroit News claimed that the man’s declaration alone would not be enough to press charges. According to the news outlet, the individual who had been apprehended was an acquaintance of Woll’s.

According to authorities, the Jewish leader, Woll, president of the Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue and ardent supporter of Israel, was attacked inside her Lafayette Park house on Oct. 21 before stumbling outside and falling on her front lawn.

At around 6:30 a.m., someone discovered her motionless and dialed 911. There were no traces of forced entry, and she was carrying her phone and ID.

Many believe Woll was the victim of a hate crime during the Israeli-Hamas conflict, but authorities have denied those charges. The Detroit metropolitan region has the largest Arabic-speaking population in the United States.

Two days after the slaying, Detroit Police Chief James E. White held a press conference and told reporters very little.

“We believe this incident was not motivated by antisemitism, and this suspect acted alone,” he said, declining to comment on a possible motive. In announcing the arrest on X, White wrote that details of the investigation “will remain confidential.”

Experts previously told reporters that withholding a suspect’s name after they had been apprehended adds another layer of intrigue to an already perplexing case.

“There are a host of possible reasons to withhold the name. I can think of many. Does it happen often? As often as a lunar eclipse,” said Joan Illuzzi-Orbon, a former senior Manhattan prosecutor.

Woll’s political connections were highlighted by Illuzzi-Orbon, who gained a rape conviction against Harvey Weinstein in 2020. She had worked for Michigan State Senator Stephanie Chang, Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin, and Attorney General Danessel, all Democrats, in addition to her Jewish advocacy.

“It could be someone in law enforcement or someone who is an informant for the government, and it could endanger him or the people the suspect was involved with. Maybe the victim was a government informant,” she said.

The prosecutor added that police might protect the name of a suspect if releasing it would pose a legitimate threat to the suspect’s family.
