Don Smerek, a former Dallas Cowboys defensive star, tragically lost his battle with cancer last week at the age of 66. Smerek, who played college football at Nevada, went on to sign with the Cowboys in 1981 after going undrafted.
He spent seven seasons with the franchise, playing in 69 games and accumulating 14.5 sacks throughout his career in Dallas.
Pro Football Hall of Famer and former Cowboys standout Randy White spoke highly of Don Smerek, describing him as a great teammate and person.

White emphasized Smerek’s reliability and dedication on the field, stating that he could always count on him to give 100% effort. Smerek’s contributions as a pass rusher on third downs were particularly notable.
White also shared fond memories of his friendship with Smerek outside of football. The two often went fishing together, strengthening their bond both on and off the field. Smerek’s magnetic personality and genuine friendship made him a beloved figure among his teammates.
Smerek, a Nevada native, relocated to Texas after retiring from the NFL. His sister, Debbie Nye, spoke about his larger-than-life personality and the lifelong friendships he formed with his teammates.
From high school to college and the NFL, Smerek’s charisma and magnetic personality left a lasting impact on those around him.
To honor Smerek’s life, his family will hold a private memorial service later this month in Henderson, Nevada. The service will serve as a gathering for those who were closest to him, including his wife, Tandi, his three brothers, his sister, and several nieces and nephews.
Smerek’s legacy as a talented football player and a remarkable individual will continue to live on through the memories and friendships he cultivated throughout his life.
