In a devastating incident, two children lost their lives and multiple individuals were injured when a car crashed into a boat club hosting a kids’ birthday party in Michigan.
The incident occurred at the Swan Boat Club in the Charter Township of Berlin on a Saturday afternoon at around 3 p.m. The driver, a 66-year-old woman, was found to be intoxicated at the time of the accident.
The Monroe County Sheriff, Troy Goodnough, struggled to hold back tears as he described the chaotic and emotional scene during a press conference on Saturday night.
He expressed the deep sorrow felt by the first responders and witnesses directly involved in the tragic incident. The car crashed into the building, plunging 25 feet, resulting in the loss of two young lives and leaving at least 15 people injured.
The boat club hosted a children’s birthday celebration when the unimaginable happened. The preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle drove through the building, causing serious injuries to both children and adults present at the party.
Six adults and three children sustained life-threatening injuries from the Michigan Boat Club accident and were rushed to nearby hospitals for immediate medical attention.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of drunk driving and the devastating consequences it can have on innocent lives.
Following the incident, the Swan Boat Club announced on Facebook that it would temporarily close its doors.
They urged the public to avoid the area to allow emergency vehicles to navigate through the scene. The club expressed gratitude for the outpouring of concern and prayers from the community and requested everyone to keep those affected in their thoughts.
Authorities are actively investigating the incident and plan to bring criminal charges against the driver responsible for this senseless tragedy. The suspect is currently in custody at the Monroe County Jail. While the investigation is ongoing, no further details have been released.
