Crowds gathered in the heart of London on Monday to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe V-E Day, as the United Kingdom launched four days of ceremonies commemorating the end of World War II in Europe.
Lining the roads around Parliament and Buckingham Palace, thousands of spectators watched as British and allied troops began a powerful procession through the capital.

Kicking off the commemoration, Big Ben tolled at noon, followed by actor Timothy Spall delivering Winston Churchill’s iconic May 8, 1945 victory speech — the same speech that once echoed through a jubilant London 80 years ago.
Though the official anniversary falls on May 8, the UK began its tributes early to align with Monday’s public holiday.
A Rare Display at the Cenotaph and a Salute from the King
A poignant symbol of remembrance stood at the center of the day’s events. For the first time since it was unveiled in 1920, the Cenotaph — Britain’s national war memorial — was draped in Union Jack flags.
The sight evoked strong emotions, as the nation reflected on the sacrifices made during the war.
In a display of unity and military strength, around 1,300 British service members paraded through Parliament Square, joined by troops from NATO allies and Ukraine — an intentional nod to today’s geopolitical realities.
As the procession reached Buckingham Palace, King Charles III offered a royal salute, underscoring the significance of the occasion.
V-E Day Is A Day of Tribute and Personal Reflection
Among the sea of flag-waving onlookers was Maria Crook, 69, who had traveled from Devon to witness the commemoration. Dressed in a hat adorned with red, white, and blue ribbons, she shared her reason for attending.
“I think it’s extremely important to pay our respects and honor those who have died for us,” she said.
The opening ceremony marked the beginning of four days of remembrance and reflection, reminding the world that the legacy of peace hard-won in 1945 must never be forgotten.
