Trump Threatens Shut Down Twitter After Fact-Check Request

"It would be a free for all on cheating, forgery and the theft of Ballots. Whoever cheated the most would win. Likewise, Social Media. Clean up your act, NOW!!!!"

President Donald Trump is now threatening to shut down social media giant Twitter after the platform requested to fact check some of his tweets this week.

With social media platforms looking to stop the spreading of fake news, Twitter requested to verify claims made by the president in two of his post. On Tuesday Twitter imposed a fact check label on the president’s tweets.

President Trump did not take this well as he went on to blast social media platforms, threatening to “strongly regulate” and going as far as saying that he may even shut them down.

In his tweet on Wednesday,  Trump stated that:

“Republicans feel that Social Media Platforms totally silence conservatives voices. We will strongly regulate, or close them down before we can ever allow this to happen,”

He made further accusations of social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook trying to influence the 2016 elections.

Trump is well known for making outrageous statements on twitter having already been called out by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch for lying that President Obama’s administration was to blame for America’s ill-preparedness to deal with coronavirus outbreak.

Ironically, he went on to make an unfounded statement about how Mail-In-Ballots would lead to massive vote-rigging in the upcoming 2020 elections stating that:

“We can’t let large scale Mail-In Ballots take root in our Country,”

“It would be a free for all on cheating, forgery and the theft of Ballots. Whoever created the most would win. Likewise, Social Media. Clean up your act, NOW!!!!”

It is still unclear what measures Trump plans to take to regulate these platforms but as someone who continues to complain about news platforms spreading fake news, it is very strange that he himself feels threatened when asked for his statements to be verified.

Should he follow through with his threat to regulate or even shut down the platforms, these will be seen as steps towards influencing the content on media which would bring America just that much closer to full-on tyranny.
