Vice President Kamala Harris campaign team is celebrating after a Georgia judge temporarily suspended a provision that would have required election officials to hand count ballots after they were machine-tabulated.

“From the beginning, this rule was an effort to delay election results to sow doubt in the outcome, and our democracy is stronger thanks to this decision to block it,” a joint statement to several media outlets read.

“We will continue fighting to ensure that voters can cast their ballot knowing it will count.”

Georgia Democratic Party Chair Rep. Nikema Williams, D-Ga., DNC acting Co-Executive Director Monica Guardiola, and Harris-Walz Deputy Campaign Manager Quentin Fulks all issued brief statements.

The joint statement applauding the verdict reflects how united state and national Democrats have been in opposing the new bill.

The law, which was set to go into effect on October 22, would have required three county elections officials at each polling station to manually count the ballots cast, rather than tally the votes themselves after the ballots were tabulated by a machine.

It was approved 3-2 by the State Elections Board (SEB), which is currently facing several lawsuits over the bill and other modifications made by the Republican-majority board.

Democrats claim the law was designed to foment dissension and doubt in Georgia’s presidential election, which was decided by fewer than 12,000 votes in 2020.

In his opinion Tuesday night, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney questioned the SEB’s choice to make revisions so close to Election Day, rather than the rule’s intent.

He stated that no training had been done or established to prepare election workers for the new system, nor had monies been set aside for this reason.

McBurney wrote, “The administrative chaos that will – not may – ensue is entirely inconsistent with the obligations of our boards of elections (and the SEB) to ensure that our elections are fair, legal, and orderly.”

Georgia Republican Party officials and former President Trump supporters defended the measure as a fair safeguard to boost voter confidence in the electoral process.
