The Israel Defense Forces released video footage on Friday showing tank fire targeting a building where Hamas commander Yahya Sinwar was besieged.

Sinwar, the mastermind of the October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel, was inside a structure in Gaza when a tank opened fire, according to the IDF. He was slain on Thursday by Israeli soldiers.

Israel pledged to assassinate the terrorist leader following the massacre that murdered 1,200 people in Israeli villages and kidnapped several hundred more.

In a joint statement on Thursday, the IDF and Israel’s Shin Bet intelligence agency said,  “Yahya Sinwar planned and executed the October 7th Massacre, promoted his murderous ideology both before and during the war, and was responsible for the murder and abduction of many Israelis.

“Yahya Sinwar was eliminated after hiding for the past year behind the civilian population of Gaza, both above and below ground in Hamas tunnels in the Gaza Strip.”

Sinwar, known in Israel as the Butcher of Khan Younis for his ruthless and savage torture methods against his foes, both Israeli and Palestinian, was widely suspected of being behind the massacre of Israeli citizens carried out by thousands of Hamas fighters on October 7.

Following the confirmation of Sinwar’s death, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Thursday that Hamas had suffered a “heavy blow,” but that the war in Gaza was far from done.

He suggested that “Hamas will no longer rule Gaza and this is the beginning of the day after Hamas, and this is an opportunity for you, the residents of Gaza, to finally break free from its tyranny.”

In addition to Sinwar, Israel has targeted other prominent Hamas and Hezbollah commanders for assassination in response to their repeated attacks on the Jewish state.

On Friday, the IDF reported that 1,5000 Hezbollah terrorist militants had been killed since Israel began attacking the Iran-backed group in southern Lebanon after a year of bombardment.

IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Col. Herzi Halevi said, “We estimate that we are in the region of 1,500 Hezbollah operatives killed, and we put our estimates in the conservative areas. I guess there are more and we don’t know, in a lot of attacks.”
