Jennifer Lopez’s appearance on American Idol could have cost her a career.

During a recent interview with comedian Nikki Glaser for Interview magazine, Jennifer Lopez discussed her life in the spotlight, including her divorce from Ben Affleck, which she said “blew up in her face.”

While she has previously revealed that she has “so much resentment” for the actor, Lopez surprised readers when she admitted to being hesitant to join American Idol.

The Jenny from the Block singer served as a judge on the show from 2011 to 2016, initially alongside Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler.

Although the actress expressed her excitement about joining the Fox singing competition series, she added that her crew appeared to have different thoughts about the move. Her team urged her against the move since it may be career suicide.

Lopez thought that she had something to contribute so she went ahead with her choice.

“I’ll do things that could be risky because I believe that they’re going to turn out OK. I’d done all these big movies and made these albums and now they’re asking me to do reality TV,” said Lopez.

The opportunity arrived after Lopez had taken a few years off work to care for her then-newborn twins Emme and Max, whom she shares with ex-husband Marc Anthony. During her career sabbatical, she mentioned that American Idol was a popular show.

The actress revealed that whatever project she undertakes boils down to one question: “What do I think I can bring to something?”

Lopez admitted that a similar debate occurred when she decided to visit Vergas during her Planet Hollywood residency from 2016 to 2018. Lopez’s staff believed: “That’s where entertainers go to die.”

The singer later proved them wrong when she received a Golden Globe nomination for her work in the 2019 film “Hustlers.”
