Bethany Joy Lenz is being open about her off-screen friendships.
The One Tree Hill alum revealed that she and co-star Sophia Bush had a falling out while filming the early 2000s teen drama series owing to her years of engagement in the ultra-Christian organization The Big House Family, which she previously referred to as a “cult.”
“I was using religion as my benchmark,” Bethany Joy Lenz writes in her memoir Dinner for Vampires: Life on a Cult TV Show (While Also Being in an Actual Cult!) according to People.
“My budding friendship with sweet Sophia became a casualty of this and instead of sitting shiva for my ego, I really f–king wish I could turn back time, walk into her trailer, and give her a long, hard hug.”
How has Bethany’s membership in the group affected their friendship?
The White Collar alum, who left the Big House Family shortly after the birth of her daughter, Rosie, whom she shares with ex-husband Michael Galeotti Jr., stated that Sophia’s behavior frequently contradicted her views on how a woman should behave.

“As bubbly and compassionate as she was, she was even more intelligent… Her mind could have been put to good use by NASA—except, of course, she’s so beautiful the astronauts would never want to leave Earth. I failed to notice that she was also trying hard,” Bethany explained.
Noting that Sophia was “frequently favored and constantly underestimated in life because of her beauty. Sophia worked obsessively at proving her value,” she added.
“Sophia herself was also hilarious, and a bit mischievous—always down for an impulsive adventure,” she shared in her memoir.
While Sophia (who played Brooke Davis on the show) and Bethany (Haley James Scott) continued to play friends on-screen throughout One Tree Hill’s nine-season run, it wasn’t until they started hosting their Drama Queens podcast in 2021 with fellow alum Hilarie Burton that they began to address their past tension.
“On Drama Queens,” Bethany said on the October 16 episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast, “we definitely talked about our time back then and what was hard and how great it was to reconnect and the feelings of unraveling things that were so mysterious to us at the time.”
However, she stated that their relationship is still developing. As Bethany stated, “It’s an ever-changing journey.”
