In a convincing 26-13 victory over the New Orleans Saints on Monday night, the Kansas City Chiefs looked like the two-time defending Super Bowl champions they are.

On their first offensive possession, the Chiefs capitalized on a Derek Carr interception, scoring a touchdown. The Chiefs got into a groove, scoring on four of their first five possessions before halftime.

Kansas City would seal the victory when Travis Kelce lined up as quarterback near the goal line. He threw the ball off to Xavier Worthy, who sprinted into the end zone for a 3-yard touchdown.

Patrick Mahomes got Kelce engaged in the game a lot. Even though he failed to score a touchdown, Kelce caught nine passes on ten targets for 70 yards.

JuJu Smith-Schuster, a veteran wide receiver, led the way with seven receptions for 130 yards. Smith-Schuster’s first 100-yard receiving performance since 2022, against the San Francisco 49ers. This was his first stint with the Chiefs.

Patrick Mahomes completed 28-of-39 passes for 331 yards. He threw one interception and zero touchdown passes. Kareem Hunt scored a touchdown and had 102 running yards on the night.

Carr and the Saints appeared to have a good rapport. In the second quarter, Carr connected with Rashid Shaheed on a 43-yard touchdown pass. The score was 10-7 at that point. However, New Orleans did not score again until early in the fourth quarter, when Carr found Foster Moreau.

The Chiefs improved to 5-0 to begin the season as they entered their bye week. The last time Kansas City began a season with five consecutive victories was in 2018. It was Mahomes’ first season as the full-time starting quarterback, and they went on to lose the AFC Championship.

New Orleans improved to 2-3 after starting the season strong. The Saints have an early divisional game at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
