In a remarkable act of generosity, MacKenzie Scott, the ex-wife of Jeff Bezos, has donated a staggering $640 million to 361 different charities. This significant contribution is part of her ongoing commitment to philanthropy and making a positive impact on society.
The donations were made through Scott’s donation vehicle, Yield Giving, which facilitated an “open call” for nonprofits to apply for funding.
Lever for Change, an organization dedicated to driving social change, managed the open call process and received over 6,000 applications from nonprofits across the country.

After careful evaluation and consideration, Scott selected 361 nonprofits as recipients of her generous grants.
These organizations were chosen for their exceptional work in advancing the voices and opportunities of individuals and families facing financial hardships, discrimination, and systemic obstacles.
The selected nonprofits are spread across 38 states, including Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. This widespread distribution ensures that communities throughout the country will benefit from Scott’s philanthropy.
Lever for Change reported that the grants provided were either $1 million or $2 million, with the initial plan being to award 250 grants worth $1 million. However, the donor team decided to expand both the number of awardees and the award amounts.
Scott’s commitment to charitable giving is evident in her previous contributions. With a reported net worth of approximately $35.7 billion, she has already donated over $17.2 billion through Yield Giving.
This extraordinary level of giving is a testament to her dedication to creating positive change in the world.
Scott’s immense wealth is derived from her stake in Amazon, the company founded by her ex-husband, Jeff Bezos. Her decision to use her fortune for philanthropic purposes aligns with her signing onto the Giving Pledge in 2019.
This initiative, created by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, his former wife Melinda French Gates, and Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett, encourages the ultra-wealthy to donate at least 50% of their wealth to charitable causes.
In her pledge, MacKenzie Scott expressed her belief in the importance of sharing her wealth and making a difference in the lives of others.
She stated, “In addition to whatever assets life has nurtured in me, I have a disproportionate amount of money to share. My approach to philanthropy will continue to be thoughtful, and I will keep at it until the safe is empty.”
