On Friday, July 26, Lady Gaga stunned the world by fluently singing in French to open the Paris Olympic Games. The multi-talented singer and actress, known for her bold performances, showcased a different facet of her talent. But the real question is: does Lady Gaga speak French?

Born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, Lady Gaga hails from an Italian-American family in New York City. She attended the all-girls Convent of the Sacred Heart in New York, where she first learned French.

Gaga has always been a high achiever, and her acceptance into New York University’s music school, Collaborative Arts Project 21, further solidified her dedication to music. However, she didn’t study French in college, as she left after one semester to pursue her pop career.

Despite not studying French in college, Gaga has sung in French multiple times. Fans may remember her rendition of “La Vie en Rose” in the film ‘A Star is Born,’ where she captivated Bradley Cooper’s character and the audience.

Speaking with Stephen Colbert, she revealed that she learned French during her high school years.

Following her Olympic performance, Lady Gaga took to social media, expressing her deep connection with French culture. “Although I am not a French artist, I have always felt an extraordinary connection with French people and singing French music,” she wrote.

Gaga added that she aimed to create a performance that would warm the heart of France and celebrate its art and music. Renting pom poms from the Le Lido archive, a real French cabaret theater, added an authentic touch to her act.

Performing “Mon Truc en Plumes” alongside multiple backup dancers, Gaga honored the French people’s tremendous history of art, music, and theatre.

She expressed her gratitude for being asked to open the Paris Olympics 2024, feeling humbled to sing such a special French song on a global stage. Gaga’s performance was a tribute to one of the most magical cities on earth—Paris.
