A bizarre and daring incident unfolded in North Florida, as a woman now faces an unusual charge of impersonating a firefighter after allegedly stealing a firetruck and attempting to deceive a passing deputy into believing she was on official duty.
The Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office reported the peculiar sequence of events, which took place on Saturday, July 15.
The startling escapade began when the firetruck, belonging to the Wellborn Volunteer Fire Department, surprisingly ran out of gas.
Notably, the same fire department had granted the suspect lodging at their fire station the night before, adding a curious twist to the story.
As the scenario unraveled, the fire department chief returned to the station the following afternoon to respond to a call, only to make a shocking discovery – the woman and the firetruck had both vanished.
A report of the stolen firetruck coincided with the time of the suspect’s hasty departure.
Intriguingly, the suspect managed to contact the fire chief while she was on the run, claiming to have run out of gas and seeking help at a business in Live Oak, approximately 10 miles northwest from Wellborn.
Promptly, a deputy from the sheriff’s office was dispatched to Live Oak, where they found the woman alongside the stolen firetruck.
Upon questioning, the audacious 44-year-old woman asserted she was a volunteer firefighter with Suwannee County.
However, investigations led by Suwannee County Fire Rescue administration quickly debunked her claim, as she was not listed on their official roster nor authorized to operate the firetruck.
Perplexingly, the woman offered no explanation for her actions, merely mentioning that she had left the firetruck’s keys inside the cab, hidden within a blue cup.
In light of her deceptive actions and unauthorized use of the firetruck, the woman was arrested and now faces charges of grand theft and fraud – specifically, impersonating a firefighter.
The incident, which transpired in Wellborn, a small community located approximately 75 miles west of Jacksonville, has left authorities and local residents astounded at the audacity of the suspect’s actions.
