Super Bowl-winning quarterback Russell Wilson has announced that he will be joining the Pittsburgh Steelers for the 2024 NFL season.

The 35-year-old quarterback had received permission from the Denver Broncos to explore his options before they officially released him when the new league year began on March 13.

Wilson had already visited several teams, including the Steelers, and spent over six hours with them on Friday. According to ESPN, Wilson will sign a team-friendly one-year deal with the Steelers.

Wilson made his announcement via social media, stating, “Year 13. Grateful. @Steelers,” accompanied by a video of Steelers fans waving their iconic “Terrible Towels” at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh.

It was expected that any team interested in signing Wilson would not have to break the bank, as the Broncos are still responsible for $38 million of his salary for the upcoming season.

The Steelers were a logical choice for Wilson, as they have struggled to find a reliable starting quarterback since the retirement of Ben Roethlisberger. Kenny Pickett, the team’s first-round pick in 2022, has a 14-10 record as a starter but has thrown only 13 touchdowns to 13 interceptions in 24 games.

The lack of consistent quarterback play led to occasional starts by Mitch Trubisky over the past two seasons, and Mason Rudolph finished the 2023 season, including the team’s playoff loss to the Buffalo Bills.

With Wilson joining the Steelers, he is expected to be the presumed starter heading into training camp. The offense is in desperate need of a breakout, and Wilson’s experience and skill set should provide a significant boost.

The Broncos made it clear that Russell Wilson would be released when the new league year began, despite the significant $85 million dead cap money associated with his release.

General manager George Paton and head coach Sean Payton issued a joint statement, thanking Wilson for his contributions and dedication to the team and community while wishing him the best in his future endeavors.

They also expressed their focus on building a strong team for the 2024 season through the draft and free agency. As Wilson embarks on this new chapter with the Steelers, the team can expect to see a significant change in their offensive approach next season.

With Arthur Smith as the offensive coordinator under head coach Mike Tomlin, the Steelers will likely adopt a completely different offensive look, aiming to maximize Wilson’s talents and lead the team to success in the upcoming season.
